A landmark and famous shop in Barcelona, Spain has announced that tourists who will not buy anything and only come to take selfies or photos will have to pay a fee of five euros.

According to the British newspaper Independent, this shop is called Cuvevovers Muria and was founded in 1898. It sells cheese, meat and other drinks and is a popular shop in Barcelona.

The storefront, antique counters, mahogany furniture and 1920s sign invite tourists to take photos, but often don't shop there.

The shop employees joked one day that they wanted to take money from tourists who came to look and take pictures without buying anything.

But the joke has now become reality, as the management has written on the front of the shop that the shop is "For visitors only, five euros per person, thank you".

According to store manager Tony Marino, there has been a drop in the number of tourists taking selfies, although no one has yet been charged.

In recent years, Barcelona has introduced several measures to combat overtourism.

Earlier this year it was announced that the municipal tourist tax for an overnight stay in a five-star guesthouse would be reduced from 5.25 euros to 6.75 euros by 2024.

In addition to the usual tourist tax for overnight stays in the area, Barcelona imposes its own surcharge, approved by the Spanish government in 2020.

The tourist tax also varies depending on the accommodation and is only applicable to regulated and official tourist guesthouses.
