Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villasencio was shot in the head by a man as he sat in a car after a rally in the northern city of Quito on Wednesday, according to the BBC. 

The current president of Ecuador confirmed the killing of Fernando Villasencio by issuing a statement on social networks.

Violent crime is said to have increased in Ecuador due to the growing number of drug-trafficking gangs, which have hampered the presidential campaign.
